College Preparatory (CP) Magnet

Banning College Preparatory Magnet students share a common special interest ‐ the desire to attend a college or university after high school. CP Magnet works closely with representatives from the UC and CSU systems. Students are programmed into Honors and/or AP (Advanced Placement) English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Foreign Language classes and are able to participate in other classes and all activities. The goal of the Banning CP Magnet Program is to provide the students with a strong academic foundation that will ensure success at the college level to achieve those goals.
 

Firefighter/Emergency Medical Services Magnet

The Firefighter/EMS Magnet develops students and prepares them academically for college and careers as first responders. This program is the place to get prepared for applying to and completing the Los Angeles Fire Department’s program. All students take A‐G required courses and experience rigorous physical training taught by the Los Angeles Fire Department. They receive in‐class support from LAFD and go on field trips to observe various Firefighter career pathways. They receive 15+ college units including Fire Technology classes from LA Harbor College and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Exam preparation.
 

Science/Technology/Engineering/Arts/Math (STEAM) Magnet

Banning High School’s new STEAM Magnet uses an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem‐solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. These are the innovators, educators, leaders, and learners of the 21st century!
 

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Junior Police Academy Magnet

Schools and 2‐year College Program was developed in 1989, with the support of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), with the focus on developing high school students for careers with LAPD. This program is affiliated with West Los Angeles Community College and students can earn an Associate of Arts Degree (AA) in Administration of Justice working through the LAPD Ahmanson Recruit and In‐Service Training Center.

These specialized programs below are available to students who belong to any of the 6 Academies.
 

AVID

AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. The program places special emphasis on growing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills. Students take the AVID elective class thnroughout their high school career, and with the same group of
students. AVID gives the middle‐of‐the‐road student extra support as they prepare for college. Students enrolled in the AVID Program also belong to one of the Banning academies listed on the other side.
 

Maritime Scholars Program (MTSP)

The Maritime Scholars program is designed to support the development of gifted, talented, and high‐ achieving youth. Through comprehensive, intensive and balanced curriculum, students develop their individual talents and relate their experiences to the realities of their local and global communities. Students share common classes and teachers to allow collaboration across the curriculum and a greater degree of personalization between teachers and students with the goal of encouraging students to be active learners, well‐rounded individuals, and engaging citizens. Students enrolled in the Maritime Scholars Program also belong to one of the Banning academies.
 

Communication Arts and Leadership (CAL) Academy

The emphasis and theme for CAL students is in Communication, Arts (Visual and Performing Arts) and Leadership. Electives include Drawing, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, Advanced Art courses, Graphic Design and Graphic Advertising Design, Instruments, Intro to Theater Arts, Theater Production, Theater Design, Journalism (school newspaper), Conflict Resolution, and Business Management and Leadership.
Possible Careers: Artist, Designer, Photographer, Journalist, Photojournalist, Radio Broadcaster, News Anchor, Artist, Author, Choreographer, Script Writer, Movie Producer, Director, Educator, Teacher, etc..
 

Global Environmental Science Academy (GESA)

GESA focuses on the study of environmental studies, where students will take courses in the field of Biology, Environmental Science, Marine Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Science Technology Research. We utilize our outdoor environmental classroom to run environmental simulations, soil, water, and air quality testing, biodiversity sampling, agriculture, and give the students a natural workplace.
Possible Careers: Marine Biologist, Chemist, Biologist, Environmental Scientist, Botanist, Landscape Design, Zoologist.
 

Global Safety and Security (GSS) Academy

The GSS Academy is an innovative career development program at Phineas Banning High School that is committed to serving our community. Our GSS students are provided with resume building workshops, career building seminars, university tours and collective event planning opportunities that will allow them to develop the necessary skills to succeed in the current and future workforce.
Classes offered: Youth and Justice, Global Trade, and Business Entrepreneurship
 

International Trade Academy (ITA)

The International Trade Academy empowers students to strive for academic excellence and provides them with foundational leadership and soft skills to prepare them to become emerging leaders, reaching their fullest potential. Our goal comes from our core values of college exposure and readiness, professional industry exposure, networking, community involvement, and academic excellence.
Possible Careers: Business Owner, International Business, Marketing Manager, Sales Engineer, General & Operations Manager, Trade Specialist, Import/Export Coordinator
 

Maritime, Agriculture, Tourism, Cuisine, and Hospitality (MATCH) Academy

MATCH students take courses in the culinary arts department and Business management. If you like to cook or want to learn how to cook and would like to pursue a career as a chef, then MATCH is the academy for you.
Possible Careers: Event/Party Planner, Hotel Management, Chef, Pastry Chef, Restaurant Owner, Restaurant Manager, Tour guides/agents
 

Pilot Academy of Technology and Health Sciences (PATHS) Academy

The PATHS academy focuses on preparing students for college and for careers in the fields of medicine, engineering, and computer science. Our students receive hands‐on experiences in our sports therapy, engineering, computer, auto body, and robotics programs.
Possible Careers: Electrical Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Chemical Engineer, Computer Repair, Software Designer, Video Game Designer, Nurse, Sports Doctor, Sports Therapy, Auto Collision Repair, Auto Shop Manager, Welder, Painter
